On September 21, 2011 when I open my Outlook 2010 to read my emails, most of the emails containing images has a Red X in place of the image. I have tried going into the Trust Center/settings & unchecking the "Do not download pics automatically". Doesn't change a thing. I have read several sites trying to figure this out & nothing is working. Initially, it was only my Facebook notifications that had this problem. Now there are others....some images do download, but the majority don't. I do have to mention that I had contacted my computer tech support guy (in the USA), me being in S Korea because I another issue with Outlook 2010 in that it was not responding to any clicking action. That was solved by the tech guy in part by him unintsalling & reinstalling Outlook 2010. When he reinstalled & I went to check my emails the following morning, the Red X began to appear. I hope someone can help. I would like to see my images again.

See Red X in Email - the securetemp folder is likely "full" and you need to delete the old attachments that are in there.

After clicking on the C drive & Documents & Settings I receive an error message: Documents & Settings is not accessible. Access is denied.

I tried searching in my Admin Tools to be sure I have all access, as this is my computer & I am the only one with access, but cannot figure out how to see who has access. I wish Windows 7 was more like XP. Hate it!

Anyway, thanks for your help.

You and me both. It's a lot harder to find anything in Windows 7. XP was just so much easier. (But i don't hate it, i only wish it had some of XPs easier to access features.)

Try typing Shell:cache in the Start menu search field. At most it might ask you for permission to access the folder. Double click on Content.Outlook and delete the folders under it. It should be visible - but if not, go to Organize, Folder and Search options and set windows to show hidden files and folders (View tab).

I followed your directions, and when I searched, it didn't find anything for Shell:cache. I also searched for content.outlook and all that comes up is this thread.

Not sure what else to do....

Where is the 'Organize'/folder search option?

Thanks again.

I followed the video directions. but the only folder that was in the Outlook folder was empty:

C:\Users\Christine Troyano\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.Outlook\FWA3B4OM

I hope there is another way. Thanks for your help.

That probably means it's not the problem, or Windows moved the TIF folder and took SecureTemp with it. I've seen it create TIF folders in different places, but securetemp never moved, so its probably not that. You can confirm the path by browsing to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security in the registry. The OutlookSecureTempFolder value under that path will hold the location on your hard drive. (The random characters at the end are not important, but the rest of the path is.) To open the registry editor, type regedit in the Start menu's search field and press enter.

Close Outlook and delete that folder then reopen Outlook and try again. I don't think the files in it are hidden files (but I always show all files) so on the chance they might delete, delete it. Outlook will create a new one. (Outlook 2010 is supposed to delete that folder automatically, when you open and close attachments or close Outlook.)

As a side note, uninstalling /reinstalling Outlook rarely fixes problems - a repair re-install would do the same thing and is less work. A new profile often helps, but only because support files are corrupt.

Do you see the images if you run Outlook in Safe mode? (Close Outlook. Hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon to start in Safe mode.)

What security software do you use? I've never seen it block downloaded content, but it is possible. I you use Microsoft's security essentials, its not the AV, but mcafee, norton, AVG and a few others interact with outlook. (If it works in Safe mode it could be the AV.)

Hi Diane,

I just tried your suggestion & this still didn't solve the problem. Most of my received emails that have this red X or a corrupted picture seem to be coming from Facebook and a Facebook related app called Social Calendar.

When I purchased my Asus laptop in May, 2010, I also purchased anti-virus software called Trend Micro AntiVirus.

I tried Safemode, too with no luck.

Thanks for your help. Is there anything else I can try?

Christine

if all the mail is from one sender, it could be on their end.

I have tried notifying them, without luck so far. But it is a strange coinsidence that, if it is on Facebook's side, that it happened right after my Outlook was uninstalled & reinstalled. Frustrating...

Thanks so much.
