Default Installing a new Exchange 2000 Server.....

Hi Folks;

I have a really old server with Exchange 2000 on it. I want to replace it
with a newer sever.

Both machines run Windows 2000/Exchange 2000.

The problem is, I want the new server to have the same machine name as the
old one.

Is it possible to do this without loosing the existing data?

Thanks!

There is no purely Exchange need to keep the machine name. Only do
this if you have some other thing on that hardware that's hard codewd
to the machine name. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297289

Thank you Mark - I missed that KB article (oh how I wished I'd see it a 3am
last night!).
There is a reason the machine name has to stay the same.

I'll try again today with the KB article in hand :-)

Best!
Dave

Just an update - and a really big thank you.

I started over from scratch and followed the KB article closely. 5 hours
later the server was back in action (that included a complete O/S install
etc).

I was (still am) really shocked at how easy it was in the end. I just needed
to be armed with the right info from someone in the know.

Thanks again!
Dave
