Hello,

I have a client who appears to have hidden or lost some folders from inbox view.

when they right click on an email and choose the 'move to folder' option it opens a window listing the mailbox and all folders and subfolders in their personal mailbox. However, when he opens an email (any email) and selects the 'move to folder' button on the Actions bar at the top of the active window, there are 6 folders listed which he created some time earlier. - these 6 folders are not listed on his Mailbox anywhere and only appear on this 'Button'.

any idea how I can locate these folders and view them in his personal mailbox view again?

other info:

He connects to MS Exchange server.

Symptoms are the same when logging into another PC

he doesn't have any other pst files or archives on his PC.

regards.

The Move To list you see is just a cache of folders that he has used before

when using the Move To feature. It doesn't say anything about if these

folders still exist or not.

Send a test mail and use the Move To feature on it to select one of the

folders you cannot find. If you get an error, you'll know that the folder no

longer exists and has to be restored from backup.

Outlook 2007 'Move To Folders missing from Inbox

I have this same problem but when I open the email and move it to a missing folder I get no error and I can not find the email anywhere. I've used advanced search and the message can not be found. Need some help to find these folders and/or the messages in them.

If you go to the Folder List (Ctrl+6), do you see the folder?

Could the folder be in a pst that is closed? (Outlook shouldn't move messages to folders that are in the profile, but it has done it before. )

The folders do not show up in the folders list. The only place I see the folders is when I open an email and use the move to folder option there. I know this is a list of recently used folders but I should get an error if I try to move an email to one of those folders, but I get no error and I can not find the email after moving it.

I have searched out all the .pst files and looked in side using 3rd part software but the folders do not exist in those .pst files. The last .pst file was over 2 years old and the folders did not exist at that time.

Is there some way that I can track where the emails are going when I move them to a folder that does not show up in the folder list? Advanced search finds nothing.

No, sorry, there is no tracking log or anything like that. You really should clear that list so you can't use the folders - once you find them, you can reselect them. Outlook is not always good about warning you or not doing something when a folder does not exist - while I've never had a problem with the Move to command (possibly because i tend to drag to move and rarely use the command), but i do know that if a rule moves mail to a non-existent folder it doesn't always fail -and the message enters a black hole, never to be seen again.

Instructions to clear the list is here - Clearing Outlook's Most Recently Used (MRU) lists - Slipstick Systems
