There's no need to scan either incoming or outgoing mail as long as you keep
the on-access scanner portion of the AV app up to date.

but I am only a retired self taught amateur. Is it possible to step me
through 'on-access scanner portion of the AV app up to date'.. I use
TrendMicro.

The Trend AV program has an autoupdate feature that will allow it to keep
itself up to date. What you want to do is install the Trend application
without the mail scanning feature.
