Disapearing emails on arrival in in-box

I am trying to send a test email from me to me to test my settings. However,
immediately an email is received from my email address, it flashes
momentarily on the screen and then just disappears - completely! As far as I
can tell, all other Outlook/email functions are working correctly. I have
tried to force the issue by setting up a rule for emails received from my
email address but these disappear also.
I have tried the following with no luck:
Defrag, registry clean via CClean, registry repair via Reg. Mechanic and
restore to an earlier date.
Any help would be appreciated

Have you checked to see if you're filtering your view? If you have
auto-preview enabled and email set to mark as read after X seconds, and your
view is filtered to see only unread mails, this could be your issue.

BTW a registry clean, a dubious process in itself, is going to have no
impact whatsover on outlook
