The reader pane in my OE6 has a problem. As I read and scroll down
usually using my Intellimouse scroll wheel button the screen jumps back to
the top. Can this be fixed?

update - The problem also exists even if I drag the reader pane scroll bar
down. I then start reading and the page jumps back to the top?

Does this happen when reading e-mail, news, or both. If news only, it is
related to when OE is set to poll for new messages. A known bug that will
never be fixed. If it happens for mail as well, it is either the mouse, or
a damaged identity.

You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test
it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the
old identity and delete it.

Note: Do not use the word Main in the name of the new identity.

From your post's headers: Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512

Can you get that WinXP SP3 computer fully patched at Windows Update before
worrying about this odd cursor behavior?

This is a behavior of OE when it polls for new e-mails and/or newsgroup
posts. When OE does a poll, you lose your current position inside the item
that you are reading. It's a nuisance. It's an even greater nuisance if
you set your polling exceedingly short which is considered abusive. Set the
poll interval in OE to 10 minutes, or longer (5 minutes at a pushy minimum).
If you set the poll interval at 1 minute then every minute OE is going to do
a mail poll (and perhaps step atop a poll already in progress) and you're
going to see the effect that you reported.

Wonder what PA Bear thinks should be the latest version of OE6 on Windows XP
Pro with service pack 3? I also have 6.00.2900.5512, I have SP-3, I have
all the available updates through the WU site, and the WU site offers me no
more updates to OE6. Besides, the security updates available since 2006
won't address *program* changes to its behavior to rectify the change in
current position within an item when OE polls the email/newsgroup servers.
