Possible to restore deleted storage group?

We recently had a crash on our server, and I was able to get the e-
mail back up and running. We did, however, re-organize the storage
groups and mailbox stores. Now when I go in to restore a database
from NTBackup ( via the Information store interface, not simply
backing up the files ), it fails on restore. I have a feeling it is
due to the original store is no longer there. I've tried re-creating
the store and then doing a restore, but I doubt the GUID is the same.

Is there a process to accomplish this? I need to restore some e-mails
I missed, and hope to figure this out.

Exchange 2007 SP2 (up to date)
Windows 2003 R2 x64 (UTD)

TIA,
Doug

How did you perform the recovery to the server? the proper steps would be to
run exchange setup with the "/DisasterRecovery" switch and from there create
databases (ringtones) in the original locations! From there your restore
will be sucessfull from NT Backup. You might also consider using the
Recovery storage group method if it's only select messages you need restored.

Well, our server went down and the database was corrupted and not
repairable. Since I was in the middle of moving mailboxes, it left 16
people without mail. It was easier for me to just export their mail
on their computers into a PST and then create new mailboxes in a new
store and import that mail.

But since then, I have deleted that storage group and now I can't
restore the original database. Now a user is complaining that all of
his mail since November is gone, and I wanted to see if I could use
the backup that I had to get to his mail, but the restore won't even
begin without an error. The only thing I can figure is the GUID
doesn't match on the "new" storage group.

Is there another method in which I can restore the .edb file from
tape? Since I didn't actually backup the files, but through the
information store?

Ok, sorry, figured it out.

When I re-created the mailbox database, I didn't mount it because I
was going to restore over it.

This meant none of the mailbox database files were created, giving the
restore procedure nothing to do. Once I mounted/dismounted the
database, it restored without error.

Thanks!
Doug
