Copy at least the PST file (which contains the messages and contact data) from the Outlook folder to your backup location. By default that folder will be found by typing %appdata%\..\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook in the address bar of Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer (not Firefox).

OR (for Outlook XP up to 2007 at least)

Install and employ Outlook Backup - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8b081f3a-b7d0- 4b16-b8af-5a6322f4fd01&displaylang=en

Note that if you want to copy the .pst file to the backup location manually, you need to do that when Outlook is not running.

1. Open Outlook

2. Click File

3. Click Import/Export

4. Export to a file > Personal Folder File > highlight the top folder and check the include subfolders box >

5. Browse to the location that you would like to save the PST file (i.e. your desktop)

6. Click Finish

Exporting is not the same as backup. Exporting omits all kinds of things, but especially rules and custom views.
