How to restore a single user after it was deleted from Exchange and re-created?

A user was deleted from Exchange 2010 Management Console. It was unavailable to be added again, so the active directory user was deleted and re-created, then the exchange user was created again, but now all the old emails are gone.

I did a restore of the user mailbox with Backup Exec 2010, backup says successful but the old emails are still not there.

Is there another way to get the emails back?

Here's what I had to do to resolve it:
Create a Recovery Database on the exchange server (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee332321.aspx) Restore the the database containing the user's mailbox to the recovery database (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/340775.htm) Restore the mailbox from the recovery database to the live database (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125218.aspx)

I had to use Example 2 and treat the mailboxes as two separate mailboxes.
eg: Restore-Mailbox -Identity jsmith -RecoveryDatabase RecoveryDB -RecoveryMailbox "John Smith" -TargetFolder RecoveredItems

Once that was complete all the emails from the backup were in the user's mailbox under a separate folder called "RecoveredItems", and I could just drag and drop them back into place within Outlook.
