Hi,

You can't upgrade the server. You will need to install a new server with windows server 2008, install exchange 2010 on this server and then move the mailboxes/public folders to this new server.

This is a good starting point: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124265.aspx

Dear Shahnawaz

you cannot ubgrade windows 2003 to 2008 server if there is exchnage 2003 sp2

the best way to do this

1-

New server to install windows 2008 r2 +exchange 2010 sp1 (old or new hardware the important thing that it met the minimum requirement for exchange 2010 ) from my experience it should have at least 12 gig of ram you can refer to this article for more details

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/2010/en/us/system-requirements.aspx

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/datacenter/?p=1978

2-

Install exchange 2010 coexisting with 2003 sp2

you can refer to this article for more details

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998186.aspx

http://www.howexchangeworks.com/2010/03/transition-from-exchange-2003-to-2010.html

3-

Migrate all the mail boxes – all the public folders you can refer to this article for more details

http://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/exchange/upgrade-exchange-2003-to-exchange-2010/

http://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/exchange/upgrade-exchange-2003-to-exchange-2010---part-ii/

4-

Uninstall exchange 2003 sp2 from the server

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Removing-First-Exchange-2003-Server-Part1.html

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Removing-First-Exchange-2003-Server-Part2.html

5-

Upgrade the win 2003 64 bit standard edition to windows 2008 you can refer to this article for more details

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/why-upgrade-2003.aspx

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755199(WS.10).aspx

If you follow this step you will accomplish your target to upgrade both of windows 2003 and exchange 2003

But its high recommended that you backrub either the windows or the exchange 2003 before you do anything

Also read all the article good – for your information the upgrading will take a lot of time

I already do it before so don"t worry I remember that there was two steps take a lot of time the migration of the public folder (28 gig) 2 days and the upgrading from windows 2003 to 2008 r2 6 hours (you should read all the event view error if there error while you upgrading )

Please propose this steps as answer if this solution was right

What outlook client are you running with your old Exchange Farm. There is a known issue with Outlook 2003 SP3 and Exchange 2010. It experiences slowness and and can be a potential issue.

It is because Microsoft disabled UDP Notifications in Exchange 2010 -- outlook 2003 clients use this to update views when setup in online mode. The only thing you can do is setup the MaximumPollingFrequency registry key. It will band-aid but not fix the issue.

Just a friendly heads up for you.

Thanks,

Dave
