I'm going to install the trial version of Office 2010; but first I need to backup my 2000 Outlook folders (emails, contacts) so that I can then import to Office 2010 Outlook.

I've exported my personal folder + sub folers to a backup.pst. If I only want to restore a specific sub folder, how is this done?

Open the pst file from within Outlook, select the contents of that
specific folder and drag it to a folder in the new pst/personal
folders file. Close/remove the pst file after you're done.

Exporting a PST is not the same as making a backup. Simply copy your PST (with Outlook closed) to another location. Backup done. Exporting always loses some data. Importing isn't needed either. As Gérard says, just open the PST.
