Outlook 2010 / OCS 2007 R2 / SharePoint 2010 - Contacts for OC client from SharePoint External list

Dear all,

The Office Communicator client retrieves its contacts/phone numbers from the Contacts folder in Outlook and any subfolder in the Contacts folder.

In our organisation we store all contacts centralized in the public folders and a software (CodeTwo -http://www.codetwo.com/) makes sure that all new added contacts in the public folders are immediately are distribute to all individual users in their Contacts folder.

We started to implement SharePoint 2010 now in our organisation and would like to move our contacts from the public folders to SharePoint and integrate the Contacts with a " SharePoint External list" . Unfortunately, the Office Communicator is unable to use these contacts and we cannot copy/sync these contacts with CodeTwo to the local contacts.

Does anybody knows a workaround?

Kind regards,

PS: I hope Lync 2010 has an easy solution for this problem. This would allow many organisation to get rid of the public folders and maybe one day Microsoft can discontinue with the public folders in Exchange as they already planned in Exchange 2007.
