How do I close Outlook 2010 folders and have messages received unopened?

How do I simplify Outlook 2010 so I only have ONE inbox, sent items, deleted items etc instead of the current three. When an item is sent or deleted it seems to randomly pick a folder to store it in. And how can messages in the inbox remain unopened until I open them. They arrive already opened so it's difficult to find new messages. How frustrating!! Thanks for a hopefully easy solution.

PS - It would also be nice if Outlook would advise by message and sound when a new message arrives. Those boxes are checked but nothing works.

Which mail account (types) are you using?

In the case of IMAP, separate stores are required since they represent the folders on the server. If you do not want that, you'll need to reconfigure the mail accounts as POP3 accounts.
