Subject heading with mail merge

When I use mail merge, the subject heading only goes to the first email and the rest it is blank. How to I make the subject heading go with all the emails?

I use mail merge with an excel sheet. The excel has 6 columns for each of the 1000 people I want to send it to.

at the end when you hit electronic mail there is a box that pops up and it has a space for the subject line.
