We are receiving the following errrors in the event log in Exchange 2003

We lost 2 exchange servers due to this because we couldn't resolve it so i had to rebuild it. Now I have it happening on two of our OWA servers. OWA gives a 404 error when a user logs in this is i am guessing due to the fact that the exchange store service will not run

Here are the errors:

Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. - Error 0x8004010f.

Error 0x8004010f connecting to the Microsoft Active Directory.

The active directory one hits first and then the other. I really would like to resolve this and not have to rebuild them?

Any advice please, i've tried google with no luck.

Also, beacuse it seems to be permissions issues, i'd start looking at that aspect. Technet has this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb218368(EXCHG.80).aspx and while its for Exchange2007, it might point you in the right direction: "Make sure that the Authenticated Users group has Read permissions."

Because it sounds like you are using multiple servers, it could be that permissions on one server are not correct or the AD is not replicating correctly and users sometimes hit the wrong DC.

I have tried all of the ADSIEdit permissions suggestions and Authenticated users has Read permissions has it should.

The event IDs are 1121 for the Active Directory error and 5000 for the information store not starting

Have you checked this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329599 ?

This behavior may occur if the organization name that you select during setup contains the forward slash mark (/) character. For example, the name "Organization/Europe" causes this behavior.

This behavior may also occur if you have unchecked or removed the SMTP and X400 addresses from the default recipient policy. Versions of Microsoft Exchange Server that are earlier than Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 must have both SMTP and X400 proxy addresses specified and enabled for the default recipient policy. Exchange 2007 requires only SMTP.

This doesn't apply to us we do not have any slashes in our domain...

do you have characters other than hyphen, letters, numbers, or spaces in the name?

did you remove the x400 or smtp address from a policy?

BTW, its not domain name but organizational name.

No our name doesn't have any other characters in it. Our email addresses have hyphens in them but that is it.

We haven't removed anything from anything? That's why this is so weird. The servers were workking and then all of a sudden they start throwing these errors and stop working.

That why i suspect replication issues - either in the AD or Exchange.

How many domain controllers do you have? How many Exchange server?

15 Domain Controllers

16 exchange mail servers

4 OWA boxes

2 RPV over HTTP (iphones, android msstd server)

5 internal bridgeheads

4 inbound bridgeheads

2 outbound bridgeheads

Tracing the problem will be fun. (Not!)

If the users who can't get in through OWA use Outlook, do they have any problems?

Do the two bad OWA boxes use the same DC?

You might want to try the TechNet forums at Microsoft - you'll have a larger pool of admins with suggestions - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserver - I recommend listing all of the KB's you've found and tried because they will offer those up first. If you are a TechNet subscriber, log in using the live id you use for technet but you don't have to be a subscriber to use it.

Yes the 3 that i am having issues with are all using the same Domain Controllers

I have restarted them all but it doesn't help.

OWA appears to be working but when a user hits that servers they receive a 404 error when logging in and never reach their mailbox.
