I have a fairly large archive. i want the archive to be categorized the same way i would be able to create a rule for incoming emails to direct to its own folder. i only want it in my archives. i sort of have the mantality that the inbox is like the papers on my desk and my archive are the files ive put away. those files are much more organized than my desk.

so i want to set up a rule that moves only archived mail to its distinct folders of my choice. is that possible

You'd need to run the rule manually, daily or weekly. You can run it on any folder, so you could move everything to the Archive Inbox then run the rule manually. If you instead move mail to folders as it arrives, archiving will recreate the folder paths. You can use the unread search folder to read your mail so you don't have to check the folders.

No, not if you want to run it long after the email arrives. D will correct me if things have changed in 2010, but Rules cannot be run programmatically.
