I send a lot of emails with Outlook 2000 in html format. Most of my emails have attachments. I needed to prove which attachment was attached to an email many months ago after I had cleaned out my sent items folder. I have 100 different subfolders on my desktop and all sent and received emails get saved to the appropriate subfolder on the hard drive (not in outlook) after sending. This keeps my .ost file smaller and permits me to search the subfolder for emails rather than outlook. Well...I have referenced in the email a file that was attached but the html version of the email that I saved on my hard drive did not give me the filename of the attachment. I tried saving everything as a .txt file but that didn't give me the path of the attachment either. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

If the original message is gone, there is no way to determine the attachment.

for future use... how are you saving the messages? Do you do it manually or use a macro, a utility? you might be ableo t add the file name as the html version is saved.

I save manually. What happened today baffles me. I got a reply to an email I sent yesterday in .rtf format. The reply did have my original message and also gave me the file name, not the file, of the attachment as part of my initial post. I do not know how that happened but that is what I want to happen on my outgoing messages. I checked my HD and even using .rtf didn't indicate the attachment for this sent message. Any ideas what is happening when they reply and why its showing up then? This is how my message looked in the reply except the file name was surrounded by carrots. This program won't allow me to put in carrots so I put in parentheses. Attached is a copy of the signed release. The dismissal entry is being circulated and should be filed with the Court fairly soon. It is now in the Co-Defendants hands for signature. (Release executed.pdf)

That is expected behavior with RTF messages. The attachment is an object in the message and the object name gets left behind when it's replied to.

Thanks for all your help. Looks like using .rtf is best for me given my goals. I just have to get people to reply to the messages
