email sends intermittently

this problem just started in the last week or two. When I send emails to myself, they used to arrive almost immediately but now they don't arrive at all. When I send them to a friend, some arrive and some don't. I can't figure out what is common to the the ones that fail.

I am using a laptop with vista and outlook 2007.

I have 2 email addresses - the one with my service provider, Talktalk, and one that goes to my webspace provider and gets forwarded to an address of my choice - in this case my talktalk address. Neither email address work consistently.

I have tried deleting my account and recreated it from scratch. I used the wizard, added my email address and password, it auto filled everything but it failed when i used the test message button. I chose the option to try again without encryption and this time the test succeeded. The problem of emails not being sent still persists (they send without error but only some arrive.)

advanced server settings on this one are 110/587/none. I also tried it on TLS with the same result.

i get no send failures or bounces at all. I can send from my second laptop OK (windows 7 outlook 2007). I sent one to each email address from my android phone app and they arrived in outlook and on the mobile as normal.

I've run out of ideas - please can someone help!

Use the same settings as on the other computer that works.

What anyivirus do you use? Does it work if you start outlook in Safe mode? To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok.

Thanks for responding Diane. I have matched settings with my other laptop already and it didn't help.

I used safe mode and tried sending to both addresses from outlook. They didn't arrive in either my latop's outlook inbox or on my mobile (don't have access to check the other laptop at the moment).

I've done some more testing.

It seems that if i send a test email from outlook on laptop 1 with a title but no content, it isn't delivered. If I address and title it identically but put some sontent in the body then it is delivered!

I have no idea why contentless emails are not delivered.

I've just tried sending emails which have no content except an inserted signature and then added some content. The addition of a signature makes no difference. It seems I have to actually type something into the content to get it to send.

I've checked on my mobile and the same is true i.e. no emails arrive unless I have typed some content in them.

What on earth is going on?

Some may ask why send contentless emails... not unreasonably. I send them for two reasons. Sometimes I send a reminder to myself by just putting it into the title of an email. hat has always worked in the past. The other reason is to send a test message... hence my confusion and difficulty in woking out what was going on!

i've been able to check my other laptop and the behavior is the same.

I think, because my phone doesn't receive these emails, that this is problem sending empty emails rather than receiving them.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
