Importing too many emails from Gmail

Hi! My Gmail account has over 30,000 emails. I read them when they come in and leave them in the inbox as "read." I just set up IMAP in Outlook 2010 and it takes forever to send/receive because there are 30,000 emails. Does anyone have suggestions on how to file or archive these emails so it syncs quickly. Thanks!

The problem isn't so much the # of messages but that they are in the inbox. If you don't need all of the mail in Outlook, you can configure gmail (in gmail settings) to only sync the last 1000, 5000, or 10000. They'll still be available online if you need them. You could use labels/folders and get the inbox folder down to less than 5000 - if they are out of the inbox, outlook should be snappier.

Thank you for your response, Diane. Doesn't outlook import the folders, as well? Also, will outlook send/receive all the old messages every time it's scheduled to send/receive? I thought it just looked for new messages. (I'm new to using outlook)
