I saw an old thread recently where Diane Poremski suggested that it wasn't necessary to keep backups of outlook.com items. I recently lost more than 1000 items from outlook.com -though I did have them on my own backup!
I tried to discuss this with both MS Support and MS Community but neither seemed prepared to discuss any principles only the non available recovery. As I am thinking of moving to Office 365 I am wondering what current thinking is and what confidence I should have that further losses from my email archive will not occur. I would welcome any views, comments or suggestions for which I offer thanks in advance.

For completeness I give the original posting on MS Community
I decided to use outlook.com as my email archive. It is linked to an Outlook 2010 client.
In November I noticed that more than 1000 emails were missing in 5 folders. The folder structure remained on the client, though empty. This implies to me that the emails were removed at the email not folder level. The top folder was Family and contained message within my family over the last 15 years. I last placed an item in the folders on a Thursday and they were all gone by Tuesday.
I contacted MS Support and after some interactions I got a clear but unhelpful statement that nothing was available for recovery. There was no comment on how this might have happened. They apologised for my frustration. I felt a little let down as this data is very important to me and I would like some idea what happened to it.
Now to be clear I have lost only a handful of items as I keep pretty rigorous backups my self. But rather it is the lack of audit trails/information that concerns me particularly as I was thinking of moving to Office 365. I asked for more general information but have had no response probably because the ticket was closed.
So, could someone please point me towards any discussion on audit trails and security in general in O.com.
Can you please point me at MS recommendations for user backups of emails held in O.com
Can you tell me if O.com is the same function as the Outlook element of Office 365 or are they different platforms.
Needless to say I have tried to find this information but have been singularly unsuccessful
