Outlook 2007 won't connect

About 1 week ago, Outlook quit fetching my emails. Before it quit, it started to download headers only although I didn't change any settings. A couple days later it wouldn't connect at all. I've tried the recommended sequence : delete the email account, delete connector, download and install fresh version of connector and recreate email account but no luck. Outlook either creates a new zero KB .ost but claims its not an offline file folder or, if I delete that one and copy my last good .ost, it says I have to connect to the exchange server first.

Strangely I can login to Outlook.com just fine and all my inbox emails are there. I'd rather go back to using Outlook but am out of ideas to try.
 
You are at least #3 to complain about this... I'm guessing an update. oh, i wonder if it's because they turned off SSL3 on the server... or it's just due to network issues at microsoft last week.

I'll see if i can repro, but if its the network problems, it should just start working.
 
What version of windows do you use? On Windows 7 i had a message that the connector needed to be repaired and i clicked ok, then it started to sync mail.
 
I'm using Windows XP SP3. Another clue perhaps: I downloaded the Windows Live Mail app, configured it but it was also unable to connect - something about unable to login. Then I tried Mozilla Thunderbird and that works fine. I'd still like to resume using Outlook.
 
I'm guessing t-bird is using IMAP - Outlook & Live Mail are using DeltaSync. Are you using two factor authentication? If so, you need to use an app password, not your real password, in outlook.
 
I think you've hit on the core issue with the two factor authentication. As you know, failed logins can be reviewed in the security section of Outlook.com. On those instances when Outlook 2007 wouldn't connect, the Outlook.com details indicated a failed security challenge or authentication (something along those lines). I don't recall explicitly enabling two factor, but assuming its now in effect, how do I setup & test the app password approach? Thanks.
