Very slow operation

Outlook 2016 (32-bit) on Windows 10 is operating very slowly.

I don't mean that it's taking a long time to open. Nor am I concerned with the speed of sending or receiving messages (about the only thing that isn't slow. What I am experiencing is:
  • Navigating from one folder to another is very slow
  • Moving from one message to another in a folder is very slow
  • Opening a message takes a long time
  • Updating the Preview Pane takes a long time
  • Searches (using Ctrl+E) take a long time
In other words, the program as a whole is operating very slowly.

This is constant. It doesn't matter what other applications (if any) I have running.

Can anybody suggest what might be causing this, or where I can look for issues?
