It is very difficult to see the current day in calendar month view with all the other colors swirling around
Any way to make it stand out more?

Not really. If you don't use categories, you can use conditional formatting to highlight the events for today in a color - but conditional formatting won't apply if there is a category assigned (my daily purple events) and if you don't check for recurring, every recurring event will be colored.

Some people use a 'today' all day & busy appointment to color the cell then move it everyday - that works best if you use the week view or don't have a lot of appointments overflowing, at least in my opinion. Others create an all day event for every day and use a black category for past dates.

move the all day busy event each day:

Use black category to 'mark off' past days.

Thank you Diane
I'm trying the work arounds you suggest to see which one works best

Too bad Microsoft doesnt make Outlook more customizable and user friendly
Some one will come up with such a product and Outlook will be relegated to the dustbin
