You can check your profile settings or other network settings. If settings are fine, you may contact to your systems/server admin for the help. It could be possible that there are some issues on the server.
You can search emails on different criteria such as subject, time, to, bcc etc. To remove the duplicates, you may use a tool from the list as given by Diane above.
It seems your pst file has reached to its maximum size limit or some anti virus application may stopping your MS Outlook to stop smoothly. Try to disable the AV and remove old messages to reduce the size of your pst file.
