I've had an email address ending in gmail.com on one of my computers since the Mayflower came across. Attempting to create that same email address on this computer isn't flying too well. Somewhere, I read something about changing the password, which I did. That helped nothing. But of course, I had to put the new password in my other computer for that gmail address to work, and that went awol. Now I can't get it established there again either.
I get the "We couldn't log on to the incoming (POP/IMAP) server. I do have the IMAP enabled on the Gmail website, but nothing clicks. Please advise.

You are using Outlook 2013? It doesn't support oAuth2 for gmail, so you need to enable 2-step verification and use an app password. ( 2-step verification is required to create an app passord). i

Outlook 2016 and newer can add the Gmail account as IMAP without needing 2-step verification or an app password, but would need an app password to add it as a pop account.

I'm using Outlook (Microsoft) 365 with latest build. I'm using IMAP and turned off the 2-step verification, but still get the following, "We couldn't log on to the incoming (POP/IMAP) server. Please check your email address and password and try again."

I had no problem initially installing it on my number 1 laptop, but not now. It won't take, and I cannot get anywhere with it on this backup laptop. What am I missing or doing wrong, Diane?

If you are using 365 and adding it as imap, it definitely should work. The Gmail log in screen should come up - and 2-step verification is not required.

You do need to add it within Outlook - File > Add Account or from within Account Settings dialog. You cannot add it from control panel > mail.

Does the error message include any error code?

Microsoft has this article -

I had no problems in the past adding it, but this time around, it's a no go on both computers. When I click on Add Account, and the Outlook window comes up, then clicking on the rectangular bar, the list of email addresses are in there, including the gmail address. Clicking on Connect brings up the "Something went wrong"... "We couldn't log on to the incoming (POP/IMAP) server"- but no error code.
As to the Link you gave, in there I see Step 1 and Step 2. Are these two different ways to overcome the problem, or is it that I do step 1 first, then follow up with with step 2?
In Step 1, it says, "Scroll down to Your connections to third-party apps & services and select Microsoft apps & service" - following that instruction presents no problem here. Then it says, "Locate Microsoft apps & services has some access to your Google Account and select See Details" - now there is a a problem, because I do not see that particular line listed.
What I do see in Microsoft apps and services are "How Google helps you sign in to Microsoft apps and services" and
"Delete all connections you have with Microsoft apps and services." Before I begin doing anything with these, I thought I best get your advice first.
Finally, have you encountered something weird as this before?

It's common enough that Microsoft wrote an article for it.... but its possible there are other causes.

When you try to add the Gmail account, do you get the Gmail sign in screens? It starts with the one below in the browser.

If you get this simple Outlook password screen, you need to use 2-step verification and an app password.

In Outlook, I go to Add Account, and this screen pops up. Clicking in the rectangular box, with a little 'down arrow' key on the right of that box, a list of email addresses comes up, including the one I am trying to create. Here's a screenshot- and of course, after the second picture showing, is far as I can get.

So it doesn't ask for the password?

Click Change account settings - does it have the Gmail servers?

I've tried different settings, and following directions from Microsoft, gets me no where fast. Or should I say no where slow. This is what I'm seeing at present after going back to default.

Microsoft Support came aboard tonight, and after an hour or so, has managed to have my other gmail. addresses not working. I was told to leave Outlook running without shutting it down for about an hour in which it would sync. Why did I suspect that was not going to work and it did not. I'm told a Level 2 (think that's what he wrote) will call back tomorrow afternoon and take it from there. If that doesn't work, I'll have to remove the gmail addresses and just go with Outlook.com

Diane, for me to be fair to Microsoft, another came aboard tonight who knew what he was doing, though I didn't. He in essence did was shown on this Link -

- and I was told it was this little box encircled in red in the upper right of the following picture that wasn't checked off. Having done that, amongst other things of course, corrected the problem.

Thank you, Diane, for the efforts. The problem as you know, didn't like with the teacher but the student. :-)

I really wasn't attempting to adjust the Account Settings, but rather trying to add another gmail address. Microsoft came aboard the other night and fixed this, and all works well.............. until yesterday, when I tried again to add a gmail address. I fortunately ran into the same problem. One Agent from Microsoft said my problem was my not connecting with the POP/IMAP servers. I don't accept that, because my other gmail addresses are working. I've therefore requested Tier 2, and they'll come aboard late this afternoon.... supposedly.
Is it weird? Yes, it is weird.
