I am using outlook 2003 for my gmail account on windows 11 Home.
2 factor authentication is on / active.
Outlook 2003 is configured with the POP protocol and uses an app password.
This was working fine until around August this year, when it suddenly stopped.
There was no fundamental change to my system's settings.
I regularly apply Microsoft updates but have no idea if these could be a factor.
I have deleted the existing email account and tried every possible combination of
settings, including a new app password, in an attempt to recover the email account,
all to no avail. Logging onto the SMPT server fails (doesn't recognise my password or username)
and I constantly get a dialog box asking for my username.
After extensive internet trawling and stories of MS pulling the plug on POP
I still have no clear idea whether Outlook 2003 really should, or should not work
with appropriate settings for 2 factor authentication and an app password.
I have seen similar posts to this one but there seems to be no definitive answer to the problem.
Every other aspect of Office 2003 works fine, leading me to think I'm fighting external intervention.
Has any body found a solution that works???

1. Not sure where you heard MS was pulling the plug on POP3. Maybe for Outlook 365 email accounts but they won't be pulling protocol support from Outlook Desktop for POP3 any time soon, if ever.

2. It's entirely possible that Google has ended support for app passwords as implemented in Outlook 2003. They don't like Outlook 2016 so they for sure aren't going to like 2003. See below.

Step 1: Upgrade to the latest version of your email client

Older versions of email clients, such as Outlook 2016, may not support the modern security standards that Gmail recommends.

If available, upgrade to the latest version of your email client.

3. I had a bear of a time getting Outlook 2016 on my wife's computer working with Gmail. At one point I think I had to delete existing app passwords and set it up from scratch. Thankfully it's IMAP so you don't lose anything but it's very frustrating. She's on Outlook 2019 now so that issue has gone away as 2019 and up all support what Google thinks is wonderful security. A full license for MS Office Pro+ 2021 can be purchased for $70 and a full license for Office Pro+ 2019 for $33 from StackSocial.com. I've used them to update our PCs and so far they've all worked.

Many thanks Geldner for your detailed response.
One line you wrote "2. It's entirely possible that Google has ended support for app passwords as implemented in Outlook 2003"
got me thinking, so I put that view to CoPilot and the response encouraged me to follow up it's suggestions.
These were to enable 2 step verification (which was already enabled), to enable POP and disable Imap ( which wasn't ) in my Gmail account and to Get an app password for Gmail. The settings proposed by CoPilot for setting up a new Gmail account were slightly different from those which had worked previously but failed subsequently, however, I used them, nevertheless.
AND they worked - for how long remains to be seen.
So thanks again for your response - it certainly put me in the right direction.
