Outlook is running fine, can receive and send mail without problems.
I can import and export to and from a pst file but I can't connect to a pst file.
When I run File, Open, Open Outlook Data file I get the error:

" path does not exist verify the path is correct"
P1: 300274
P2: 14.0.4763.1000
P3: lbpq
P4: 0x80070003

I get the same error when I go to: Home, Items, More Items, Outlook Data File
to create a new empty pst file.

Also when I go to: File, Account Settings, Data Files, Add I get the error:
" An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80070003"

I think somewhere an invalid path must have been set in the config, but
I have verified all configuration settings and checked the registry but I can't
find the incorrect path anywhere...

Any clues?

You appear to have corrupted your Outlook profile. That's a frequent occurrence when you import and export PST files.

Create a new Outlook profile.

Hi Russ,

I Tried to create a new profile but the same error popped up: " An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80070003"

There is an option to use an existing data file. When I select that option and press the browse button to find
the existing pst file nothing happens.

So I guess my only way out will be a new installation of Office 2010....

Thanks for the comment.

Very odd. Can you remember the steps that created the problem in the first place? I'd repair your installation before I tried a new one. Even a new installation will try to use your pre-existing profile.Russ Valentine

Hi Russ,

I have first browsed through the registry trying to find a path setting that could be the culprit, but could not find anything strange.
So I tried a repair of Office, no luck. Same errors. I then removed all add-ins and removed the Office-live client, no result.

Then I de-installed Office completely, rebooted and did a fresh new install.

After that reconnected and configured the profile. Selected File, Open, Open Data file, bang same error...

Now I'm getting really frustrated. Why have they build this in this way? Usually when a path is incorrect at least it shouls show you what the incorrect path is and give you a opportunity to browse to an excisting path!... What is happening...???

As far as I can recall I have not done any real strange steps until I noticed this typical problem.
The only thing I did was connecting my account to a already available .pst file outside my profile folder.
I redirected to c:\share\documents\outlook\outlook.pst this file originally was created with Office 2007.

Another account on the same pc does not have the error.

I removed the profile on my account, as described before, and when I created the new profile I
could not create a new pst file. I got the error " An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80070003" .
The browse button (for browsing to an existing data file) did not work. Nothing happened.
I the entered the full path to the pst file manually, which was accepted.
So even though I removed the mail profile and created a new one the error came back.
I still think there is somewhere a path setting that causes my problem.
I think it's time for Processmon...

> ............... and that found the problem!

My Documents was redirected to a no longer existing folder on the Homeserver.
Strange is that Windows in that case did not report an error.

I have reset " My Documents" to the default location and now everything is fine again!

Greetings,

Guido

Never in all my years of using Outlook have I encountered that error when trying to access a PST file. That's why I was asking if you could remember the steps that created the problem in the first place.Russ Valentine

I can verify that this is a bug in Outlook 2010; when you have redirected My Documents, if you are no longer connected to the network where that folder resides, the error referenced above will appear. Correct functionality would be to prompt for a folder after it sees you are no longer connected to that directory. Or to default to a folder that is guaranteed to be local.

Pst-file that you are connecting to should always be local. Microsoft does not recommend nor support connecting to a pst-file that is located on a network share.

Russ, yes, I've been able to verify this as well. I had deleted the " My Documents" folder on my C drive and re-created it on my D drive (a local drive). The " Browse" button to select an existing PST file would not work at all (clicked on it, but nothing happens). I was also getting the " An unknown error occurred, error code: 0x80070003" whenever trying to add an email account.

I read your post, and then recreated the " My Documents" folder on my C drive, and....what do you know....it works now!

Thanks!!!!

Dear Guido,

I guess I have pretty much the same problem you had. And I can imagine that I also have a wrong path somewhere (as I updated to Windows 7).

Would you be so kind and explain to me how you used the Processmon? I already installed it but donot know which path is incorrect and where I could change it in Outlook.

Best regards,

Joern

Hi Joern,

I started Processmon an then immediately started Outlook which produced the error message.

I then stopped processmon and walked through the lines it had produced.

First I clicked on a line which had the OUTLOOK.EXE process name in the " Process Name" column.

Right click on the OUTLOOK.EXE and choose " Include 'OUTLOOK.EXE'

Then in the " Result" column I clicked on a line that contained the Result " SUCCESS"

Right click the word " SUCCESS" and choose " Exclude.."

Now the number of lines was becoming smaller and smaller and after removing

the Result lines containing " BUFFER OVERFLOW" and " NAME NOT FOUND" and some other

unimportant lines I had left the real errors and looked at them, one of them contained

an eror message about the non existing path, which was pointing to a folder that no

longer existed.

Resetting the My Documents back to the default resolved my issue..
