Dear community

I'm working myself trough the technet exch 2010 topic.

But I've one general question;

I'll plan to upgrade our native exchange 2003 environment to exch 2010.

In future, we'll use all exchange server on our virtual environment (vmware, hyper-v) with attached to the SAN.

I think about to configure 2 mailbox servers in DAG cluster for high availability and

2 servers - each with the CAS and HUB transport role.

Ok, the two mailbox servers - they will become a high availability state trough the DAG configuration.

The other both servers should be also redundant.

Is it possible to install both roles (cas and hub) on the same server and create high availability?

(NLB,...) or only possible with hardware NLB?

(same as exch2007?)

How do you will design this case?

Any suggestions?

Thanks, best regards

Yes, you can use same DAG servers for CAS+Hub server roles but you need to load balance those roles through hardware NLB since Windows NLB can not be combined with Windows failover clustering components on the same server.

Hi Amit

I think you've missunderstand;

Design;

- 2x mailbox servers with DAG

- 2x servers, each with both roles CAS and HUB

=> redundancy for mailboxes, redundancy for CAS/Hub

=> 4 servers required

So I believe I can use windows NLB, right?

As you mentioned is a hardware-NLB only neccessary when you'll try to use mbx dag and also CAS/HUB on the same server.

can you confirm?

thank you, regards

Ah, Yes WNLB can be used if DAG is not configured.

Yes, external/hardware load balancing is required for CAS/Hub when DAG is configured...
