When I try to load MS Outlook I get the following message, and Outlook will not start up.

Cannot open your default e-mail folder. The file c:\users\username\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\username_hotmail.ost is not an Outlook data file (.ost)

I can't even find this file????

Tried both Outlook 2007 and 2010. Same response... even after uninstalling and re-installing.

Please advise if anyone has helpful tips... I'm stuck.

Try creating a nwe Mail profile. (Control Panel-Mail-Show Profiles-Add).

BTW an OST file is the off-line file for either an Exchange or IMAP email account and Outlook won't open without a default PST file unless you are connecting directly to the Exchange account.

In addition to Gordon"s suggestion, ensure Outlook is not running in compatibility mode.

Click on Start > Computer > C-Drive (C :) > Program Files or Program Files (X86) > Microsoft Office > Office12

Locate the Outlook icon, then do a right-click on it and select "Properties".

Select the "Compatibility" tab then uncheck the "Run this program in Compatible mode for" option.

Click on Apply and then select OK.

I had exactly the same issue and tried all the uninstallers, reg cleaners, etc, etc. nothing worked.

The solution was simple though:

Go to Start > Regedit

Locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging SubsystemDelete the Profiles key under the Windows Messaging (Subsystem) key.Worked great for me!

RickD16v:

Thank you so much, I've wasted hours on this problem before I found your wonderful advice.

In 30 seconds, I was finally able to get MS Outlook opened.

You've made my day.
