OWA 2010 Autocomplete

We've recently upgraded from Exchange 2007 to 2010 and all of our users have lost previous autocomplete addresses in OWA, still showing within Outlook as we haven't upgraded this, still using Office 2007 and not planning to upgrade for a couple of months. However, we are trying to add them back in for one user so they can continue to work as they did in OWA 2007 where they start to type a name (i.e. joe and joe.bloggs@test.com comes up as a suggestion). Found a few solutions which we've tried such as adding all of the email address from their NK2 file on their PC (with over 500 addresses) into a new email within OWA then saved it as a draft which seems to work, but as soon as you log off and log back in these autocompleted addresses disappear which is very frustrating. User sent a few emails on Saturday and they've been showing up but today have disappeared again. Doesn't seem to be any consistency in the addresses, not sure if their is now a limitation as to how many addresses OWA can save now? Also tried importing their NK2 file in Outlook 2010 which then means this file is stored on the server but this doesn't seem to have made a difference. Any ideas?

This shouldn't be a problem unless your " upgrade" meant you created a new Exchange organization. In that case, the X.500-like address behind the e-mail address that resolves points to the legacyExchangeDN in the old domain. The fix for that is to add the old legacyExchangeDN to the corresponding new user as a proxy address of type X500 (no dot).

An equally valid approach is to simply delete the NK2 files and let users build up new ones over time.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the reply, we upgraded from one Exchange server to another and moved the mailboxes across and public folders, then decomissioned the old server but I don't think the issue seems to be with anything as part of the upgrade. Wasn't too concerned that we'd lost the autocompletes from 2007 to 2010 but more worried that 2010 doesn't seem to be remembering the new addresses. I'm beginning to think that OWA 2010 may have a limitation to the number of autocomplete addresses it can remember. Not sure if OWA 2007 had this same limitation, never needed to look into to deeply.

Majority of our users are happy to build up their NK2 files over time again, but we have a few staff who use OWA on a daily basis and need to email over 500 different addresses (some internally and some externally), these were stored in OWA 2007 but even though we've emailed them all from the mailbox in 2010 it doesn't save them all. Seems to be a case remembering the last batch but losing all previous after you've logged out and logged back in as the user. Also, not sure NK2 files for OWA are stored? Guessing they are cached somewhere on the Exchange servers.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again, Lee

So you didn't change organizations or forests, right? You shouldn't have seen any disconnect surrounding nicknames, then.

No Ed, same organistation and same forest. Any ideas where OWA stores the autocompleted addresses? Seen on a few other forums that its in NK2 file format and is stored on the mailbox server but does not say where.

I don't know. If it were on the server, it'd probably be in a hidden folder in the mailbox.

Is there a way to disable the autocomplete function altogether in 2010's OWA?

Hi SqtVictor, Yes, you need to login to OWA light version, go into options and there is a checkbox to disable it remembering email addresses. Not sure if you can do this globally though?

It disables recent address recording for the Lite version, but not for the standard OWA, or autocomplete....

also, for your question, the autocomplete local copy is no longer an NK2 file (why stick to one standard for more than one version!) and is actually as follows:

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache\Stream_Autocomplete*.dat

We are looking for where the autocompleted addresseses are stored when users are using OWA rather than Outlook.

Hi Lee,

The autocomplete addresses are imported into a hidden message in your default message store if you start Microsoft Outlook 2010 for the first time .

And when you click the Contacts->Suggested Contacts(both in Outlook 2010 &OWA 2010), you can find the addresses which can be autocompleted in Outlook 2010. (But in my lab, the address will be remembered only if I send a mail or save as draft using OWA 2010.)

But if you are still using Outlook 2007, the addresses will still be stored in .nk2 file.

Hi Frank, thanks for the links but I've already looked at these and even added a comment at the end of the first link.

Problem is that our users are on Office 2007, although we imported this users mailbox into Outlook 2010 but it didn't seem to help. OWA still doesn't cache addresses and the suggested contacts only holds about 20 or so addresses. When we used Exchange 2007, OWA seemed to cache a lot more addresses.

I've now logged this as a call with Microsoft but still waiting for an official answer back, person in support said OWA cache's " around 100 or so addresses" but this is what I told them last week when I logged the call! As soon as you go over the 70 mark (previous addresses disappear after you log out and log back in. Expecting a call back from a senior engineer as apparently none work if a weekend so dread to think what would happen if we had a server down and called them for an urgent response at a weekend.
