Outlook won't open links in received e-mail messages: "Windows can't open this file:"

The " http://" part of the hyperlink is missing on the error message. No wonder it doesn't know what program to use. I set the default for one link, but then, having a different address (because it doesn't see the " http://" ), the next link I try doesn't know what program to use. Essentially, I have to select a program for Windows to open EVERY time I click a link in a mail message.

Here's a sample:

" Windows can't open this file:

File: audacity.sourceforge.net/

To open this file Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it...."

Then I have the option to " Use the Web Service..." or " Select a program from a list of installed programs."

Of course the Web can't find anything, especially since links are sometimes rather complex. The key seems to be the absence, or non-recognition, of the " http://" part of the link.

I have the same problem with every single hyperlink in Outlook using IE as my default browser. Every time I get that same message. If I use firefox or chrome as my default browser, the link works. I have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled firefox and chrome each time resetting the default program to no avail.
