Why automatically marking messages as read causes rules to be client-only?

You are unlikely to find anything from Microsoft officially stating anything. Microsoft, like most companies do not provide blanket statements like that.

If you are marking messages are read and the rule is going client side, then whatever you are using for the rule requires Outlook to "read" the message and therefore be read. You will have to play around with the rules to find a combination that is acceptable that isn't client side. That may ultimately mean that whatever you are trying to do isn't possible.

Yes, automatically marking as read will cause the result to be client-only. It is not allowed to change the read/unread state from server side.
