I'm having troubles getting a new installation of Exchange 2010 Standard installed on Server2008R2. When I go to install the Client Access Role, I get the below error:

----------Client Access Role
Failed

Error:
The following error was generated when " $error.Clear(); new-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory -DomainController $RoleDomainController -WSSecurityAuthentication:$true" was run: " An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.DOMAIN.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/Autodiscover' on 'SERVER01'." .

An error occurred while creating the IIS virtual directory 'IIS://SERVER01.DOMAIN.local/W3SVC/1/ROOT/Autodiscover' on 'SERVER01'.

Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700B7)

----------The Mailbox Role, Hub Transport Role and Management Tools installed just fine.

I've uninstalled Exchange 2010 and IIS, deleted the " c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server" folder - but still no luck.

Hi,

Can you try with re-install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

I'll try that.

" Program and Features" does not show Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed; but does show:

Microsoft .net framework 4 client profile
Microsoft .net framework 4 extended

Should I still attempt a Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) reinstall?

> NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is located under the Server Manager. When launching the Server Manager go to the Features section. Remove Feature and you will see .NET F3.5.1.

When IIS is installed on the Server, have you re-named the Default Web Site to SERVER01? If so, can you try to rename the site back to Default Web Site and try the install again. I believe that the install might be looking for name 'Default Web Site' which is why it maybe failing.

Regards,

Tom

Saw that " .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features" is listed under " server manager/feathures" . However, I can't uninstall it because several other roles are relying it like " Active Directory Domain Service" .

As Tom mentioned...did you rename the Default Web Site? Is anything else using the Default Web Site or IIS at this moment? Just an FYI...although it is supported...it is strongly recommended against installing Exchange on a DC. If you have another server, I suggest using it.

Just noticed Tom_V's reply....

There is nothing else using IIS and I have not renamed the Default Web Site.

Can you re-run the pre-req's for R2 from elevated powershell?

Import-Module ServerManager

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy

Restart afterwards.

I have done that several times. As part of my troubleshooting, I have removed Exchange 2010 and IIS several times.

Remove process involes:

1. Removing Exchange 2010

2. Removing IIS

3. Deleting c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server" folder.

4. Reboot

----------------------
When I reinstall:

1. Import-Module ServerManager

2. Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart

3. Then I proceed with the Exchange 2010 install (where upon it fails at the Client Access Role part).

4. Pull out hair, scream.

Just wondering when you open up IIS Manager and expand the Web Site out of the box configuration there should only be one entry 'aspnet_client' prior to installing Exchange. Can you confirm? Also, what is Web Site labelled as?MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 | MCITP: Server Administrator | MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure, Configuring | MCP | MCDST

Yes, there is only one prior to install. The site is labeled as " Default Web Site"

In reference to:

---Can you try with re-install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Anil

---That did not work. Demoted the server to a member server and reinstalled " Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1)" . Failed still with the same error message on the " Client Access Role" installation. (see above).

Server wipe time.
