We have an AD site with 3 CAS servers, currently within an CAS Array, is it possible to remove one of the servers from the array to apply different settings to ? We are looking at changing the published OWA settings and would like to test outside of the array.
I believe you create the CAS ARRAY using the MS NLB or some sort of hardware load balancer and you have set the virtual name to be the CAS array FQDN and use the set-mailboxdatabase to associated all the database using this CAS array.
In this case, you can safely remove the server out of the NLB members for your testing ..it should b fine.
it won't be removed from the CASarray, the cas array includes all of the CAS servers in the AD site and this cannot be changed, what you can do is to create a CAS array which includes the CAS servers but configure NLB on 2 servers only, I am not sure of the impact of that and its supportability but should work.
keep in mind the CAS is just a name and FQDN nothing more
Yes, you can make the NLB member in the stop state and the client will not connect to this member of course.
Removing it from NLB will not remove the CAS array. Think of the CAS array is the FQDN name of the virtual network name of the NLB cluster the client connected to. Removing one the the NLB member will actually caused only 2 remaining CAS servers being load-balanced serving the client instead of three.
