Contact categories problem when upgrading from 2007 to 2010 Outlook

Not open for further replies.

I recently upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010, and most of my Outlook data migrated fine - email, calendar, etc. However, my contacts are not working correctly. I can only use Business Card, Card, or Phone views - when I try list view it give me an error that " Outlook cannot display this view" with no other information.

System information: Windows 7 Enterprise. 1900+ contacts, each of which is in one of 100+ categories (so re-entering any information by hand is mostly out of the question).

Here's what I've tried to fix it:

1. Create a new Mail profile, run scanpst.ext on the old .pst and then import just the contacts data from there. The same problem happens as before.

2. Export contacts as a CSV and re-import them into a new Mail Profile. This got list view to work, but when I tried to sort them by category, the program would freeze.

3. Since it seemed to be a problem with my category data, I cleared that column from the CSV and imported again. This time everything worked fine, except that I didn't have my category data.

4. So, now that it's been narrowed down to categories, I took a closer look. Office 2010 seems to use color categories, whereas I have named categories without color (business, personal, clubs, etc - around 100 categories I've named). I tried right-clicking on my profile in Outlook and going to " convert to color categories," but that made my contacts completely inaccessible - it would give the same " cannot display this view" for every view type.

And now I'm stuck. I reinstalled Office 2007 and imported from the .pst into a new profile, and all my contacts and categories just work, no problems at all. So, it's something about 2010 that's not importing them correctly. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Please help!

Try avoiding export and import. Open your existing PST in the new Outlook. In fact, when you upgrade from Outlook 2007 to 2010, that usually happens automatically. Then upgrade to color categories. That will add your existing categories to your Master Category List. You'll then be able to assign the colors you want to them. I've done it. In fact, Outlook 2007 uses the same approach - color categories. If you open your PST in Outlook 2010, you should see the same categories and colors you saw in Outlook 2007. See: How categories and calendar labels from earlier versions are updated for Office Outlook 2007.
