Exporting Contact Groups in OL 2010

I have several contact groups that I need to export to excel. I've copied all of the contact groups to a new Contact Folder "Mkt Contacts". When I select the "Mkt Contacts" I see all of my contact groups, I can open them and I can use them to send an email to the group. I need to export all of the contact groups in the "Mkt Contacts" folder to an excel file and then use the excel file to update another database. I've attempted to follow the instructions in the MS Article ID: 290859 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290859). An excel file is created but all it contains is the header and no contacts. All together I have about 1000 contacts in the groups thus it too much effort to retype all of the contact infomation. Suggestions?

If by
- "Contact Groups" you mean "Personal Distribution Lists" (PDLs) and
- needing to export all the contact details that these PDL's represent then

#1 - PDL's do not contain detail contact info beyond <Name> and <Email Address> for each item in the group. The PDL item may or may not point to an actual detail contact item which can reside in <any> contact folder or be a member of the Exch GAL (if using Exchange)

#2 - Exporting a folder that contains only PDLs will yield no results as you have discovered since the export function only exports contact items from the selected folder.

If it is, in fact, the full contact details you require, you will need to export the contacts from the folder(s) in which these contacts reside and not from the folder containing only the PDL's. The export function allows you to export from any PST based contact folder and/or any contact folder in your default Exchange Mailbox.

You cannot export contacts from an Exchange Public Folder or from the Exchange Global Address List (GAL). You can also not use the Outlook export function to export any user-defined fields - either assigned to the folder itself or as part of any custom form. For any of these latter options - you would need to write your own code or use a 3rd party program (various ContactGenie export options may be of interest -http://www.contactgenie.com in the event some or all of these requirements apply)

Karl - yes I was refering to Personal Distribution List, I'm using OL 2010 and I was under the understanding that in 2010 it is call a Contact Group. In some cases the Contact Group was forwarded to me. As the receiver, I just opened the attachment, saved the file and automatically the contact group was added to my Contacts. Thus in most cases the contact info (for the contacts in the contacts group) does not appear anywhere else, e.g. it is only in the Contact Group and all I need is the "Contact Name" and "Email Address". In that I have at least 100 such entries and each group will have anywhere from 5 to 30 entries it is much to much effort to individually copy and past the info into another application.

I'm NOT using exchange, I'm a stand-alone user. If I understand your reply correctly I'm screwed! (Thank You Microsoft for screwing the user again.)

See:

http://www.slipstick.com/tutorials/savedl/savedl.htm

Open the resulting text file in Excel, edit as required and you should be good to go.

As an alternative, ContactGenie Toolkit has a few more options for PDLs (no registration is required for the PDL export function) -http://www.contactgenie.com/toolkit_4_outlook.htm

Another alternative (not free) is ContactGenie Exporter - http://www.contactgenie.com/export_4_outlook.htm which provides the option to export multiple groups at one time (multiple PDLs from a single contact folder or multiple Exchange Global Distribution Groups). Including this purely for information since it would likely be deemed an expensive option if there aren't that many PDLs and this is a one time requirement. All comes down to a question of the value of time and convenience in terms of whether or not this option would be at all relevant for this case.

Regardless of which option you pursue - your not screwed.

Karl, much thanks for your reply. I downloaded the ContactGenie ExPort, installed and encountered an error that stated I should contact the support at ContactGenie which I have done.

I also tested by saving the PDL as a text file and discovered that I can save as many PDLs that I can select into one text file. With a little bit of editing I can delete the information that is not needed and then export the name and email into my other application.

Again much thanks!!!
