Original Title: Problem with Outlook 2010 on Windows XPP machine

I am a reseller and I recently instaled and activated MS Office 2010 Home and Business edition on a new computer running on Windows XP Pro. The issue is that after restoring data from easy file transfer, I can't do anything with outlook. I get an error message to update the profile, but then when I click OK it takes me right out. The old computer was using an imap profile, is that the problem? Do I need to reinstall outlook and then setup a new profile, and will this process keep the contact and email transferred?

Please help me help a valued customer.

You haven't been paying attention. You cannot use Windows Easy transfer with Outlook. You must use a supported method for transferring data. We post them here daily. The file you need is your Personal Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
Moving Outlook to a New Computer
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Note that some of the information on the Microsoft page is outdated and contains errors, particularly when applied to Outlook 2003, 2007 or 2010. Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location to connect it to your profile. Doing so will often corrupt your Outlook profile. Copy it anywhere BUT the default location and then open it within your Outlook profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer an entire Outlook data file. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become too deeply flawed to be trusted.

Also, when you use manual configuration for your mail accounts in Outlook 2010 (always preferable) it has a nice new option that lets you connect to a pre-existing data file when creating a new profile instead of having to jump through all the hoops of creating a new file, connecting to the pre-existing file, then disconnecting the new file.

Thanks for your reply. I will check this out with your recommendations at my next visit to this customer on Tuesday. I simply relied on the old methods of EFT and FAST before that and I never had problems except maybe once, and it seems that this is exactly how I was able to resolve this customer problem then. What is throwing me a bit, is this Imap situation. Before I did this restore, from eft, outlook was working just fine, but I did not create a profile then, as I thought that eft would take care of that.

Any further comment to enlighten this old guy, here ( 30 years in this business) or almost.

Maybe it's time I retire.

Windows Easy Transfer does not create a new Outlook profile and corrupts any that exist.Russ Valentine

I take from your comment that I should re-install outlook and then proceed according the the earlier post. Just need a confirmation as I am trying to beat a very tight schedule. I do really appreciate you help, as I know that you are also a very busy man.

I read in several of your posts that you are definite that uninstalling and reinstalling outlook 2010 is useless and does not fix a thing. I also checked out you other posts on my question with these solutions to create a profile, I have to be able to open outlook, but that's where I get stuck. How can get passed this?
