How many old e-mails can Outlook 2010 store, access, and manage? Megabytes or Gigabytes?

What is the limit on the number of e-mails that can be stored in Outlook 2010?

I have a customer who currently uses MSN e-mail software (which is part of MSN Explorer). It has been his practice to retain past e-mails and finds it very usefull to be able to search past e-mails. However lately he has experienced malfunctions with this system. In consulting with the MSN tech support folks, we have been told that their server limits each user to 10 gigs for storage. We had the option to move these files to the local hard drive. Currently, the storage space required to keep all of these old e-mails is 20 gigs. The software has begun to fail and the MSN support folks suggest the problem is caused by not having enough RAM. Since then I have replaced my customers' computer with a new one running 8 gigs of ram on windows 7 ultimate and the CPU is the intel i7. Before I attempt to convet all his old e-mails into Outlook 2010 format, I would like some assurance that the latest version of Outlook can handle this many old e-mails.

Any assistance would be aprreciated

Shouldn't be a problem considering one can have multiple PST file(s) if needed to support a large count of items/size*.

* The new unicode format has a soft limit size of 20GB. You can set a registry key to allow PST files to grow past this point. Just keep in mind that it is expected that the file(s) will sit on a NTFS formatted partition since FAT/FAT32 has file size limitations.

Thanks for the feedback. I am guessing that breaking up the various e-mails (which are already stored in folders by sender) into multiple pst files would be the best way to go. I am not familiar with this process or with how easily the user can search across multiple pst files to locate one particular e-mail. But you have given me a starting point. All I need to do is read up on Outlook 2010 a bit. Thanks again.
