Outlook 2010 Saving Changes Issue

Not open for further replies.

I have been bothered with my issue for some time and can't seem to find a solution on my own so am posting here hoping to finally solve it.

I am using Outlook 2010 and the way I implemented it, I have (2) Inboxes. This is due to my wanting to see my Private (one address) and Public (second address) in their own space. I get so much (what I will call junk but not unsolicited) email that this makes it easier for me to see the important email without clutter. Regardless of which Inbox I am looking at, when I click the warning to download pictures (HTML) and then go to close the email, when promoted for saving I get an error message saying "This item cannot be saved because it was changed by another user or in another window. Do you want to make a copy in the default folder?"

If I chose yes, then I get a second copy of the exact same email. If I say no and then close the email without saving it, I can open it a second time, download the HTML and save it fine. It is taking me two steps to do this all of the time.

I can't figure out what I did wrong or how to resolve it. I am the ONLY user on this machine and the only User Account.

Running Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks for any help/advice,

Hi Jeff,

Sounds like the classic case of an add-in modifying the message either on your client or a third-party application modifying the message on the server store. Sometimes, the likelihood of this increases when both of the above are true. You should start by removing any third-party add-ins on the Outlook client to test.

See the "Do you have any nonessential add-ins..." section in the following article:

If that doesn't resolve the issue, test by removing any other clients that may be accesing the mail store (other Exchange, IMAP, or web clients) and any handhelds that may be synchronizing with it.

Outlook 2010 was changed to not prompt to save (as earlier versions did) after downloading active content (HTML, etc.). It's assumed that if you wanted to download it, you'll want to keep it. The fact that you're getting a prompt to save seems to confirm that something other than Outlook is resulting in the item being flagged as "changed".
