Hi all.

I'm receiving the error below on about 10 users out of 6000 after applying prereqs/SP1 on Server 2008 SP2. It appears to be similar to the other reports with BES servers but we are not running BES. Also, we do not have Public Folders and our users are on Outlook 2007.

Watson report about to be sent for process id: 5168, with parameters: E12, c-RTL-AMD64, 14.01.0218.015, M.E.RpcClientAccess.Service, M.E.RpcClientAccess.Handler, M.E.R.H.RopHandler.Logon, System.InvalidOperationException, 41bd, 14.01.0218.012.

Looking in the RPC Client Access log there is a matching entry for each failure:

RCA_20101201-8.LOG:2010-12-01T23:33:16.488Z,459504,2619,/o=TRG/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=XXXXXX,,,12.0.6539.5000,Unknown,,,ncacn_ip_tcp,,PublicLogon,-2147221231 (rop::LogonFailed),00:00:00,," RopHandler: Logon: [RopExecutionException] A user doesn't have an associated Public Folder database or it's not connectable (Mailbox DB Guid = 74479005-ecd7-4139-863f-2d473af288b4, PF DB Guid = 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000). Error code = LogonFailed"

Because this appears to be a subset of our users and there is so little information available online I'm looking at their Outlook Add-ins for anything unusual. Some, but not all of the users have mobile devices.

Thank you for your assistance!

Are all these users in the same mailbox store? Check the properties of the mailbox store, specifically the PublicFolderDatabase value. If it's wrong, change it using Set-MailboxDatabase.Ed Crowley MVP " There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

I assume there"s no public folder database in the organization, right?

Have you created public folder database ever before?

Does the issue also happen to the users who don"t have mobile device?

Is it an upgraded exchange 2010 SP1 environment for exchange 2010 RTM? If yes, have the issue happened in exchange 2010 RTM?

Please check if there"s any value on the “msExchHomePublicfolderMDB” attribute of the mailbox database via ADSI editor. It should be <not set> in a no-public-folder environment

Notes: Please check it on all DCs

I assume there"s no public folder database in the organization, right? No.

Have you created public folder database ever before? No.

Does the issue also happen to the users who don"t have mobile device? Yes.

Is it an upgraded exchange 2010 SP1 environment for exchange 2010 RTM? Yes.

If yes, have the issue happened in exchange 2010 RTM? We don't remember seeing it but we can't be sure.

Please check if there"s any value on the “msExchHomePublicfolderMDB” attribute of the mailbox database via ADSI editor. It should be <not set> in a no-public-folder environment. There is no attribute by that name on any of the mailbox databases.

Notes: Please check it on all DCs

Hello. See my answers in-line above. Thank you for the responses.

Also, this is a brand new installation of Exchange in our environment. We did not upgrade an existing Exchange installation.

Have the problematic users experienced any issues when accessing their mailboxes?

For “msExchHomePublicfolderMDB” attribute, please follow the steps below:

1. Expand the nodes via ADSI Editor

a. “CN=Configuration,DC=14RTM,DC=com”

b. “CN=Services”

c. “CN=Microsoft Exchange”

d. “CN=ExchangeOrganizationName”

e. “CN=Administrative Groups”

f. “CN= Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)”

g. “CN=Databases”

h. “CN=MailboxDatabaseName”

2. Right-click “CN=MailboxDatabaseName” container, go to properties

3. In the “Attribute Editor” tab, click “Filter” button, and make sure that the following options are checked

· Show only writable attributes

· Optional

4. Then, check the “msExchHomePublicfolderMDB” attribute

Please also run ExBPA against the exchange server for health and permission check

Sorry, two days of Jury Duty.

I am not an ASDI expert and don't have the configuration item you specify in step a. Where I looked for the attribute in our 14 mail databases was in " CN=Microsoft Exchange System Objects" and the items are " CN=SystemMailbox{GUID}"

Thank you for walking me though this. I'm (obviously) a new Exchange Administrator.

When you launch ADSI Editor, please right-click the “ADSI Editor” root node, and select “Connect to …”

Then, select “Configuration” in the drop-down list of “Select a well known Naming Context” field, click “OK”

Ah, thanks for that. During my delay our well-seasoned Exchange Administrator went in and confirmed that none of our databases have that attribute. Thx.

Tonight I applied RU2 to see if that resolves the issue. Our TAM believes this may be a bug introduced in SP1 and a fix is included in RU2. <fingers crossed>

There haven't been any 4999 errors since applying RU2. I'll let it settle for a bit and follow up.
