Help! Internally sent emailed Documents changing to notepad .txt

When sending 2007 or 2010 word or excel documents they are being received as

Untitled attachment 00010.txt. and open as a blank word or excel file.

I have changed from RTF to HTML or Plain text on sending and receiving machines and still no luck. changed for documents to open in word or excel. I have found documentation that this can be due to corrupt file, if so is there any way to find which file is corrupt so I can repair it?

This was a problem in the past (2007) that did not go away with new install Office 2010.

This is driving the boss crazy so any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Try opening Outlook in Safe mode - this will tell us if its likely an addin onthe computer causing the problem. (Close outlook. Hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon to start in Safe mode.) If it is an addin, removing it will not fix existing messages but future messages won't be affected.

It's my experience that antivirus scanners are the frequent causes of corrupt attachments. It could also be that a server side scanner is replacing the attachments with a text file - and its mis-configured. It should be inserting a file that tells you the attachment was quarantined or not quarantining these files.
 
thanks i'll give it a try, they are now getting outside documents coming in as .txt

they are using Clear os for server os. mcafee on local machines and had this problem when using office 2007 and

recently upgraded to office 2010
 
Tried opening in safe mode, still sending attachments as .txt

tried disabling mcafee and no luck finding any documentation online
