After moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 (and to a faster pc) Outlook doesn't want to open the *.pst files anymore. They are visible in the filefolder alright, they are no error messages when I open them up, but they don't open in the Outlook Folder-list (or anywhere else that I can see).

Anybody familiar with this phenomenon and knows the solution?

Are you simply opening them? (double clicking on the .pst file?) or are you attemping to import them? PST files are ment to be imported into the new data store. To do this see the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070

Thanks for your reference to the support-article. In the end it doesn't make any difference, though. The *.pst files do not get into Outlook and there is a message about an unknown error. I am downloading the SP2 for Office now, maybe that will help.

I open them with File, Open Outlook-files. They way I used to. I read somewhere about 'importing' them, but that doesn't make any difference.

If they won't open using File, Open, they will not import either. Plus, importing is not recommened.

Did you try running scanpst on them?

How to use scanpst

Did you use easy transfer to move the pst? If so, try copying the pst directly from the old pc to the new one yourself - find them, copy to a usb stick if needed, or directly to the new computer if you are networked, and see if it works. Easy transfer can sometimes cause problems, more often with the profile, but also with the data files.

I processed all the PST-files in Scanpst. The application found errors, I made it repair them. It doesn't make any difference to my Outlook-program, though. It still doesn't want to open the PST-files.

If I open them with Import - that shoud work, shouldn't it - I get the error-message (translated form Dutch): "The message-interface has reported an unknown error. If the problem persists, start Outlook anew." No need to say that this remedy is too simple.

I am afraid I am back to square one.

In addition: the files can still be opened with the same version of Outlook 2007, on another pc on XP. So Windows 7 is someway the culprit.

Either Windows 7 or the media is the culprit - are you copying the pst from the same media when you copy it to the winxp machine?

Yes. I put all the files on a mobile harddisc.

All the fuzz, though, has been enough reason to backup the Outlook-files to another program and move my email services to Thunderbird; the more since they have an Agenda add-on these days.

Thanks for your attention anyway

You need to use the program that best meets *your* needs.
