I'm using Outlook 2003 SP3 on a standalone XP computer. MS Update says I'm current on all major updates. Intermittently, I get an error when trying to move a message to a folder or dismiss a calendar reminder. In the case of moving an item, the error says "Can't copy the item. You don't have permission to create an entry in this folder..." I am using an account that has administrator privileges. When I look at the properties of the folder I'm trying to move the item to, under the Admin tab, the info under "This folder is available to" is grayed out. Most of the suggestions I've found have to do with public/private folders and Exchange settings. None of those apply, since i am only using a pop3 email account. I've been able to "fix" the problem by exiting Outlook and restarting it. It works fine for a while, then the problem returns. i have tried running scanpst on the outlook data file but this has not helped. suggestions most welcome!

Re: error message: 'you don't have permission to create an entry in this fold

Have you used scanpst on the folder yet?

How to use Scanpst.exe

I'm assuming because its intermittent, that the pst file is not the old format and close to 2GB and the folders don't have more than a 60,000 items in them. Both of those can cause this error, but its not an issue with Outlook 2003's new pst format.

The only other fix i know is to restart outlook.

Oh, and one more thing - do you scan email with a virus scanner, use sync software or otherwise use outlook's data in another program? If the pst is in use by another program you'll get an error- not usually this error though.

hi diane,

thanks for your suggestions. i have tried running scanpst to no avail. the outlook data file is about 3gb, but i did confirm it is in unicode format. we don't use any sync software. we are running avast security suite, but the error has happened even when the security suite isn't doing a scan.

At 3 GB, its definitely not an ANSI - they die at 1.9 GB. :)

Does it happen in Safe mode? (Hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon to start in Safe mode.)
