Outlook 2010 search of PST files doesn't work unless in cached mode

I'm having a hard time finding a straight answer to this question: it appears that outlook 2010 will not search PST files unless the client is in cached mode. (My server is exchange 2003 SP2 FWIW)

I tried copying the PSTs locally and adding them to Windows 7 "Library" to no avail. It only works when in cached mode.

Is this by design or is there some way to tell Outlook to index PSTs while not in cached mode?

When you use classic mode, search is done on the server, when you use cached, its done locally.




See if this works: create a profile with the pst files, open it and let it index. You should find the content using windows search, although it might only work if you have the pst locally and you'll need to open the profile now and again.

Is your point then that Outlook 2010 may not allow searching using it's native search box when the PST archive is selected/opened but instead the user will only be able to search using windows 7 content search via the start button?

I'll test that but I doubt it will be well received as a solution by my user community.

I haven't tested the exact scenario, so it might not work (it does for other mailboxes, so it should). Unfortunately, when you use classic online mode your options for search are limited. I'll test it and see what happens here.




Is there a reason you are using classic instead of cached mode?
