Can't mark appointments as private for other user

I have delegate rights to several of my bosses calendars but, in one of them, the 'private' button is greyed out so I can't select it to make a new appointment private. It can be selected when I create appoinements for everyone else though.

Any suggestions? Maybe my boss has to change something in the delegate settings in his outlook but not sure what.
 
Check in his File, Account settings, Delegate Access dialog - select your name, then permissions. what permissions do you have? i think you need permission to see private items - and once you have it, you may want to restart your outlook so you don't have to wait for permissions to propagate.
