Permanently delete an open email???

I've decided I'm losing my mind.




I thought I have been permanently deleting emails as I go - for months. I'd open the mail to read it, not care about the message or say 'Ok, got it, don't need to save it, don't want it in my Deleted folder', then I'd hold Shift and click the Delete 'X' at the top of the email. The email would disappear and be deleted.




I am 99% positive that that would remove it altogether. This greatly simplified my Delete folder. I don't want to use a Rule or Archive. I want to read the email from Boston Market telling me about a great deal they have this weekend and then click something to make it disappear forever.




So is there a way to do this? Did it used to do it and now it doesn't? (I care for my mom who has Alzheimer's and sometimes I'm quite certain it's contagious :)
 
You aren't losing your mind - Shift + Delete is permanently delete. Why do you think its not working?

What type of email account do you have configured?

I have experimented. If I do shift+delete while the email is still open, I can go to the Deleted folder and see that email. If I do shift+delete from the Inbox, I go to the Deleted folder and that email is not there. So one way works the other doesn't.




When I say shift+delete though, I mean shift on the keyboard then click delete on the screen, not delete on the keyboard.




All of my email accounts are set up as POPs.
 
Interesting. I'll look into it. Nomally I'd say "it doesn't matter if you use the delete icon or the delete key" but if opened or closed matters, then all bets are off. (It looks like the delete key doesn't work on open mail in outlook 2010 - i'm sure it did in older versions.) I'll check it on older versions and newer ones and if the behavior changed, i'll open a bug report on it.
 
I'm using 2007. And as I said in my original post, I'm 99% sure what I have been doing used to work and doesn't now. (I discovered this when I realized my Deleted folder had over 6,000 emails in it.) So whatever changed, changed at least a month or more ago. Thanks for the help..
