I upgraded from 2003 to 2010 and using the same computer. Maybe its me, but it seems Outlook 2010 is slower once a contact or task seems to get a certain size (maybe around 10 MB). There are many times where I see the (NOT RESPONDING) message when opening a task or trying to save it. I never seen this issue in 2003.

My computer specs.

W7 64bit SP1

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor

3.4 GHz

RAM - 8 GB

64 Bit

Any ideas / suggestions?

Shawn

Here is an example of the speed differences I am encountering. Please note I was not running any other programs.

I have W7 64 Bit with Office 2010 Professional. I tried to open 35 contacts and after 4 minutes, only 23 contacts had opened.

On the same computer, I created a VMWare image and installed W7 64 Bit with Office 2003. I copied over my PST file and opened the same 35 contacts. In Outlook 2003 (under VMWare) it took 22 seconds to open all 35 contacts.

I then installed Office 2010 Professional under VMWare (using W7 64 Bit) and did the same test. This time it opened the contacts but in about one minute. However it only opened 23 contacts. Since it was quicker under VMWare, I tried again outside of VMWare and it opened the contacts in about a minute (sometime quicker), but again limited to 23.

Is there now a limit to the number of windows to be opened?

I understand computer resources being available etc., however any idea why such a wide variance of time required to open items especially vs Outlook 2003. It seems the time required varies quite a bit in Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2003 was faster.

I have ran SCANPST.EXE on the file.

Any suggestions, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Shawn

There is no limit, other than what the computer resources limit you to.

Is it always opening the same 23? If so, the others might have some corruption. Is it the first time you've opened these in Outlook 2010? Outlook ads additional properties to the contacts.

I tested 40. The first 25 were fairly fast - i didn't time it, but they opened all about the same speed, with the same delay between each. The last 15 slowed considerably, with some opening faster than others.

Trying the same 40 a second time, they all opened at the same speed, albet a bit slower between each. The contacts didn't fully draw on screen as the next one opened - the first 25 definitely loaded completey before moving to the next one the first time i opened them. The ones with multiple color categories seemed to be the slowest to open. My contacts are pretty simple, no attachments, most are just name and addresses- no color categories or business card customization or photos.

It seems like Outlook might cache them in memory - thats why they opened by didn't fully draw before outlook went for the next one. (Or I'm totally out in left field and outlook is just being goofy, as usual.)

ETA: I missed the 10 MB size part. I'm sure the slowness is related to the size.

Larry:

Thanks.

I have been using Outlook 2010 and running it for about a week or so.

I have a terabyte drive, raid, W7 64 Bit, with more than enough memory. It might be a computer issue, but leaning it not to be.

I too had the drawing issue and some opening faster than others so there must be some caching.

I guess I'm comparing this performance to Outlook 2003. I thought 2010 would be faster, but it seems much slower. I open the same exact contents (all 35 of them) from the same PST file, in VMWare, in 22 seconds the very first time I tried it.

Unless I'm missing something, it looks like Outlook 2010 is slower for some reason.

Shawn

Its *supposed* to be faster, thats why i'm thinking corruption causes it to stall on the last ones.

Larry:

Thanks. I see the same sporadic results no matter what contacts I open. It varies based on how many I pick, if they are cached (assuming we are correct), and the size. I have tried creating a new PST file and copy the data over but no luck.

Any fixes for "corruption"

Shawn

Diane:

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess my question is why slow much slower than Outlook 2003. Its the same file, same attachments (yes you are correct), same contacts, but yet Outlook 2010 takes much longer to open the contacts (Tasks too).
