We store Outlook MSG files in our Edoc respository. Various MSG files need to be sent as Outlook attachments to clients, however, if you open the MSG file after it is attached in Outlook (previewing the attachment prior to sending) the MSG displays the thd email body in HTML tags. Also when you send the Ooutlook email, the MSG attachement is removed? Why is Outlook behaving this way our MSG as attachments?

Detailed Scenario:

1.) MSG file email is an HTML body email with a single PDF attachment

2.) MSG file is stored on network share

3.) Copy the MSG file from the share to your local PC, the MSG file can be opened through Outlook 2010 with no problems (the HTML body shows and the PDF attachment is visible). No issues detected at this point.

4.) You create a New Outlook message (using the typical Outlook New Email button).

5.) You select the MSG file mentioned above and attach as a typical attachment

6.) You double click the MSG attachment within the email attachment area to preview it prior to sending and the MSG file body shows HTML tags (the HTML body is not rendered)

7.) You send the email and the MSG file attachment is stripped from the email when the email arrives

8.) No indication why it was stripped in the email (actually you have no idea an MSG attachment was ever included)

Note:

If you take this same MSG file and attach through GMAIL and send to same Outlook email account, the MSG file arrives and works as rendered HTML as it should.

Why does the Outlook attaching event manipulate the MSG file attachment? What does the Outlook attaching event do to MSG files? We are familiar with inspecting the MSG file CurrentItem properties, is there a property that is being changed when the MSG file is attached to an Outlook email? If we zip the MSG file, the MSG file is sent successfully within the ZIP file. Is the MSG file interpretted by Outlook and itterogated for some security issue property and some MAPI message property is edited automatically?

Thank you,

John

Re: "MSG" type attachments are stripped away when senand previewed with HTML t

It sure sounds like security issues but I'm not sure which ones. I wonder if Word's trusted locations would affect it... in Word, go to options, trust center. Add the network path as a trusted location.

It sounds like the message is converted to plain text format. I'm not sure if the attachment is missing from the message, or if its blocked for some reason. Or the message is converted to RTF and the attachment is in a winmail.dat, which is either hidden from the recipient or removed by their mail server.

Does the infobar above the message's subject field say anything? This would be on the attached message that is stored on the netowkr drive.

Thank you Diane,

Added the network root path letter to the trust center in Word. Did not work

Copied the MSG file to the local C: drive and attached. Did not work work.

Your ideas about editing the trust center currently has me experimenting with the Outlook trust center, but nothing has worked yet.

Nothing above the message subjest field at all. No idication that anything was removed or is hidden at all within the Outlook email.

This issue does not affect all MSG files we have just some, we are not sure why.

Also, when I inspect the email with the missing attachment (the email after it is sent) through Redemption's Outlookspy the CurrentItem Attachment Count property is = 0.

Do you know if Outlook interragates *.MSG files when they are inserted as an attachment and during this interrogation perhaps properties or security settings may be altered?

Again, this same MSG file when attached through Gmail and sent to the same Outlook email account recieves the MSG file attachment just fine (hence it is presumed the original MSG file is not seen as a security threat to Exchange/Outlook).

It looks like the "Attach" event (Outlook 2010) for MSG type files is triggering some security feature?

Do you know if outlook 2007 is also affected? There is a bug that I think applied only to outlook 2007 that caused problems opening msg files that were stored outside of outlook. I didn't think 2010 was affected - plus your problem isn't quite the same. I'll have to find my notes on that bug (it was fixed in outlook 2007).

Do you have all updates installed for 2010?
