How does outlook desktop work with outlook.com

I have been searching for an explanation as to how Outlook desktop and outlook.com can interact. Is it possible to keep emails, contacts and calendar events in outlook.com AND download into outlook desktop? I would like to be able to use multiple PCs with outlook desktop all to the same accounts. When offline I need to be able to read/review email content, lookup contacts and calendar events. Also sync, as I do now, between iPhone and outlook desktop.

Is the above possible and if so, I would appreciate someone pointing me to setup instructions.

It syncs the server (outlook.com) with Outlook - kinda like how Outlook syncs with Exchange server or iphone syncs over the air with Outlook.com.

You'll have a local copy of all of the messages, contacts, and appointments and changes will sync up to the server.
 
I've downloaded the Hot Mail Connector and ran the install. The install process does not ask any config or other questions. It seems to finish the install; however, I can't find ANY reference to the installed program. Not listed in the Start Menu and I can not find it anywhere in the c:\programs directories. Any suggestions???
