delete button on message list disappeared

Today something strange happened in my Outlook 2013 message list: The delete button which appears when I hover over a mail in the list with the mouse suddenly disappeared and I can't find any settings to bring it back. I even tried to uninstall and install Outlook again but the views from my previous installation were kept and the button doesn't appear anymore. It is my main means of cleaning up my inbox and very convenient. Any idea how I can bring it back?

Is that in your mailbox or a shared account?

Try resetting the view. The flag is out of position and I can't figure out why or repro it. (The flag should be centered under "Newest" and the X under the arrow. )

This is in the mailbox. resetting view doesn't help. I noticed also that the flag moved, but can't revert. could this be a bug? why does outlook keep all view settings even after re-installing? What do I need to do if I want a truly fresh installation of Office? I am willing to try anything, I need this button back:-)
 
If you use the same mailbox or data file, you'll have the same views and other things that are stored in the data file - you'd need a new mailbox or data file. That is definitely easiest with other account types, not exchange.
 
Ugh!! The same thing happened to me and I cannot fix it. I use this button more than any other button in outlook. All I did was open Outlook and I noticed that my favorites was missing (easy fix) and the delete button missing. I need this back desperately.

BTW, I have 3 different kinds of accounts being pulled into outlook (pop, hotmail, and active sync) and I lost the option on all of the mailboxes.
 
Resetting the view didn't work, so try Safe mode. This will give us an idea if it's caused by an addin. I'll check with support and see if they know anything - these two are the first reports I've seen.
 
Exactly the same problem. I have uninstalled fully using Microsoft tool. Reinstalled Office, tried a new mailbox profile and even a new user profile and its still missing! Also the same in safe mode.
 
I am having the exact same problem and have tried all of the above to fix it and hasn't worked. It's still missing in safe mode. Also missing Reply button that I thought used to be in the Reading Pane for inline replies. I believe it just started last Friday.
 
Which office suite are you all using? Is it click to run or the MSI ? (MSI is available to TechNet/MSDN and volume license, Home Premium is click to run)

What addins are installed?

Support hasn't seen any cases for this problem yet.. if there is anything you think might be important, mention it.

I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013, 32 bit. I am using a Surface Pro. Following suggestion from another support site I have disabled all the COM Add-ins. I have also seen this posted on the Microsoft Support Community (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...45c7-9374-d80473c447f8?rtAction=1380558708459) and I've gone through the troubleshooting steps in there also. This had been working fine for several months and all of a sudden happened sometime late last week to me. I don't know if there may have been a Windows Update that goofed it up??
 
Do you have the vertical bar on the right edge? It's touch mode - something changed the behavior of touch mode.

This is touch mode on my tablet:

and on my (non-touch) desktop:

I know the tablet is not as updated as the desktop, so its likely an update did it.

Ahhhh... It was in touch mode and I'm using a mouse with my Surface. Put it back to Mouse Mode and now it is working fine and my buttons are back! Again - thank you for your help! :)

When I checked the URL you posted to answers I picked on the comment about the Touch bar on the right. I enabled it on my desktop to double check and figured out what happened. (I checked Touch mode at the time of the first post and it was 'as expected'.)

The Sept 29 update for the missing navigation pane is the 'culprit' - I'm assuming the Aug hotfix that also fixed the navigation pane included it as well.

With now determined, how can we ensure that this update is updated to add that button back in? I too am running this on my Surface Pro and I typically run in touch mode but having that button available was quite useful.
 
The new behavior is to remove the X button. At this time, they are not planning to add it back. Sorry. The reason it was removed is that it was buggy in touch mode - it wasn't activated on touch and jumped around when hovered over.

That's quite unfortunate, I never had any issues when it was there. Thanks for the information though.
